THINGS TO DO IN ZANZIBAR

THINGS TO DO IN ZANZIBAR

In 2019, I traveled to Tanzania for the first time, and it stole my heart. The entire country is amazing, but I’m an island girl at heart so Unguja (more commonly called Zanzibar) is definitely very special to me. This beautiful archipelago is getting more and more attention amongst travellers, and it’s easy to understand why.

Located on the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is a very diverse and special place. I’ve compiled the top things to do while visiting this tropical paradise. I hope it helps you plan your trip, or just makes you daydream of the crystal clear water, pristine beaches, and welcoming people.

There are a few things to keep in mind before visiting Zanzibar.

First of all, please be respectful of the local culture. Zanzibar is a blend of different religions and different cultures, but the main religious is islam. That being said, it is important to keep in mind to dress and act appropriately. Bikinis and swim trunks are absolutely acceptable while on the beach, but always cover up when stepping out of the beach and into village areas.

Also, be respectful of nature. You will have the opportunity to get quite close to many animals in Zanzibar; dolphins, turtles, cows, etc. Remember to never touch wild animals.

Zanzibar is a safe island, but try to not walk around alone at night, especially if you are a woman. That point goes for pretty much anywhere in the world actually. It’s always good to walk around in small groups and try to not venture out too far at night.

If you keep all these points in mind, you will be able to enjoy Zanzibar to the fullest while being mindful of local communities. Now here are the top 10 things to do while on your holiday.

Go Snorkelling

Mnemba Island

You can’t go to Zanzibar without snorkelling. If you are visiting Nungwi beach, the famous Mnemba island is a great place to snorkel. Fun fact: this island is owned by Bill Gates, so no one can actually go on it.. but snorkelling and exploring the sandbanks around it is a must nonetheless! Don’t worry if you are not in Nungwi though, there are beautiful snorkelling spots all around the island!

Many tour companies can take you to Mnemba, but the best one of all is my friend’s company: Dream Dhow. They are a local company and offer all kinds of daily tours. Wear a lot of sunscreen, bring a good underwater camera, and enjoy your day to the fullest.

Dolphins

The best thing I’ve done in Zanzibar was swimming with dolphins in the Indian Ocean. My friend and his Dream Dhow crew always make an effort to find dolphins and stop on the way to Mnemba island. It’s absolutely amazing to be able to jump in the water and see these beautiful creatures in their natural environment. It truly is the best experience and it should be at the top of your bucket list!!

Go Scuba Diving

If you think snorkelling in Zanzibar is amazing, try scuba diving! You will be amazed at the many coral reefs and underwater biodiversity. Many tour companies offer scuba diving for qualified divers. Don’t worry if you are not already qualified because you can get your PADI or SSI certification at one of the many dive schools in Zanzibar.

The water is very clear and warm, and the diving conditions are generally pretty good all year round. According to many divers, Zanzibar is one of the best places in Africa to dive! You will be able to see turtles, dolphins, trumpet fish, parrot fish, starfish, stingrays, and so much more underwater life.

Here’s a short list of my favourite diving spots in Zanzibar:

-Mnemba Atoll

-Pemba Island

-Tumbatu Island

-Kizimkazi

-Mafia Island (although pretty far from Zanzibar, Mafia Island is well worth the detour.. especially if you want to dive with whale sharks!)

Visit Stone Town

Stone Town is the Old part of Zanzibar City, which is the capital of Zanzibar. When you arrive to the island by boat or plane, you will most likely arrive in Stone Town. From there, you can travel to anywhere on the island.

Stone Town is truly amazing as it is a real melting pot of cultures. You will notice Swahili, Arabic, Indian and European influences in the architecture and landscape. With all these strong cultures, Stone Town somehow still managed to keep a lot of its indigenous elements. It makes for a very incredible city.

You can spend hours walking through the narrow streets of the Old City, visiting local markets, and admiring the cultural and urban diversity. Stone Town is definitely worth a visit.

Take a Spice Tour

Although Zanzibar is famous for snorkelling, diving, and all things beach, it is also very know for its spice tours. Zanzibar is one of the largest spice producers in the world, and it’s quite impressive to go see the process for yourself. Majority of spice tours can be taken in and around Stone Town, where most of the spice and fruit farms are located (the biggest ones being in Masingini Forest).

The tour guides will take you through the farms, educate you on all the process, and make you taste some spices! It’s interesting to know that the farms you visit on the spice tours are not the actual farms where most of the crops are grown. They are little farms for the sole purpose of tourism and tours. This is proof of how popular the spice tours really are in Zanzibar. It’s definitely a must-do if you are traveling on this beautiful island!

Most tours cost about 15$ USD and last between 2 and 3 hours.

Kite Surf in Paje

The town of Paje is a beautiful beach town located on the southeast coast of Zanzibar. It’s mostly famous for it’s beautiful white sand, dreamy turquoise water and excellent conditions for water sports! Paje is a great spot to visit as it is not as busy and popular as the northern part of the island (Nungwi, for example).

If you are looking to get in the water and try surf and/or kite surf, Paje is the perfect place for you. I definitely recommend spending a few days there before it gets very crowded in the next few years!

Spend Time at the Turtle Sanctuary in Nungwi

If you are spending time on the north shore of Zanzibar, Mnarani Marine Turtles Conservation Pond is well worth the visit. During low tide, it’s only a short walk away from most hotels and restaurants in Nungwi . This turtle conservation sanctuary was established by locals in 1993 in a large natural pond. To this day, turtles of many different species and sizes are kept at the sanctuary, and volunteers take good care of them.

Be careful not to confuse Mnarani Marine Turtles Conservation Pond with Baraka Natural Aquarium. The aquarium allows tourists to swim with the turtles, and although it seems like a fun activity, many experts and locals say it can be harmful to these beautiful creatures. I personally recommend the turtle sanctuary over the aquarium. Also, the profits from the sanctuary entrance fees go towards turtle conservation and stay within the local community!

Don’t Miss the Full Moon Party at Kendwa Rocks

If you are lucky enough to be on Zanzibar’s north shore during a full moon, you must go to the full moon party at Kendwa Rocks (they usually happen on Saturdays). Full moon parties are popular all around the world, mostly in Thailand, and are so much fun! The music, the dancing, the energy, the performers, are just some of the elements that make this experience so unforgettable. I know it’s not for everyone, but I decided to add it to this list of must-dos because it was definitely one of the highlights of my first time in Zanzibar in 2019.

Eat at the Famous Rock Restaurant

The Rock Restaurant Zanzibar is exactly what is sounds like: a beautiful restaurant sitting on a rock in the middle of the water. It’s located off the coast of Michanwi Pingwe beach in Zanzibar and is absolutely worth a visit. If you enjoy the ocean, delicious seafood and unique experiences, you must add The Rock Restaurant to your itinerary.

Useful tip: be sure to make a reservation in advance! This place is very popular and has limited seating.

Visit Prison Island

Prison Island tours are very popular in Zanzibar. This beautiful island (known as Changuu Island by the locals, or even Quarantine Island) is home to giant land tortoises, beautiful beaches, clear water, and interesting history.

The name “Prison Island” comes from the fact that the island was originally supposed to hold a prison. That plan never came to fruition, but Changuu Island ended up being used as a quarantine station for yellow fever. You will learn all about that fascinating history when you go on a Prison Island tour. Other things you will be able to enjoy are snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing, and a nice boat ride on the Indian Ocean.

Most half-day Prison Island tours range around 40-50$ USD.

Enjoy a Sunset Cruise

Last but not least, when in Zanzibar you have to indulge in a sunset cruise! Whether you are traveling solo, with friends, or as a couple, this is the ultimate activity to do on the Indian Ocean. Many tour companies offer beautiful sunset sailing, but once again I strongly recommend Dream Dhow. The views from the coast of Zanzibar will truly take your breath away.

Zanzibar is one of my favourite places ever and I recommend it to anyone that loves the ocean, the sun, discovering new cultures, meeting friendly people, and being immersed in nature. There are so many things to do in Zanzibar that I could not begin to list all of them. I decided to mention my personal favourites, but please feel free to add more recommendations in the comment section.
