2 DAYS IN ICELAND: ITINERARY

Iceland itinerary

Ever since I started my job as a flight attendant in 2016 I’ve been trying to take as many people as I can on little trips around the world. I traveled with my parents, my friends, my colleagues, but never with one of my brothers. So, this September, I decided to bring my little (not so little) brother to Iceland for a weekend… and it was absolutely amazing. In this post, I will share our itinerary along with a few pictures from our trip. Hope you enjoy it!

DAY 1

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

We took a flight from Toronto to Keflavík airport and landed Sunday morning around 8:30 am. We immediately rented a car at the airport and started our little road trip around southern Iceland. Our first stop was at the beautiful Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. From the airport, the drive took about 2 hours and the scenery was breathtaking (we even saw a full rainbow). The access to the waterfall is free but you have to pay 700 Icelandic kronor (approximately 7$ CAD) for the parking. Seljalandsfoss is very impressive and it’s worth the drive. You can even walk behind the waterfall (but be ready to get wet)!

Selfoss Waterfall

From one waterfall to the other. Our next destination for this day trip was the Selfoss waterfall (yes, the famous rainbow waterfall). The access to the park is free and the parking as well. From Seljalandsfoss, the drive took about 50 minutes. Once we got there, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that access to the park as well as the parking was free. The waterfall is surrounded by a few little shops and restaurants so you can easily spend a few hours there. We got extremely lucky because the sun came out as soon as we got to the waterfall.. and we saw the amazing rainbow!!! My brother and I have seen many waterfalls in our lives but we both agree that this one was the most impressive ever (mostly because of the double rainbow forming at the bottom of it).

Reynisfjara

Our third and final stop of the day was Reynisfjara (the famous black sand beach). From the Selfoss waterfall, the drive took approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. On route, we stopped for lunch and we also stopped at Eyjafjallajökull. We had so much fun walking around the beach and discovering the weird and beautiful nature of Iceland. After the beach, we drove back to the little village of Selfoss for the night. We stayed in the cutest Bed & Breakfast called Bitra B&B and we absolutely recommend it!

DAY 2

Kerið

Day 2 was a fun one! We decided to drive the Golden Circle and finish the day in Reykjavík. Our first stop was Kerið (an old volcano crater). From Selfoss, we drove 15 minutes to get to the crater. The access to the park costs 400 Kr per person (approximately 4.50$ CAD). We got there around 9 am and there were not a lot of people which was very good. However, the crater was in the shadow (it is probably better to visit Kerid around noon so you can see the beautiful blue water with the sun shining directly on it)! It was beautiful nonetheless and we got some good pictures!

Geysir & Gullfoss Waterfalls

Geysir is one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen. The access to the park is free and there are a few little shops around it. From the Geysir, the Gulfoss waterfalls are about a 10-minute drive. These waterfalls are very different from the other ones we saw on this trip (they are massive and so strong). The Golden Circle tour is a nice little itinerary that you can easily do in one morning or one afternoon. On our way back to Reykjavík, we drove through Þingvellir (Thingvellir in English) National Park. We also stopped on the side of the road to have lunch and tried to pet a few wild sheep!!

Reykjavík

After visiting and exploring so much nature, we wanted to spend a few hours in the city, so we headed to Reykjavík. We found a parking spot in the middle of the city and just walked around for the entire afternoon. My brother had his eye on the Hallgrímskirkja Church (which was designed after the rock formations you can find at Reynisfjara), so that is the main thing we visited in Reykjavík. We paid 1000 Kr each to get to the top of the tower and the view was totally worth it! After spending about one hour in the church and being lucky enough to witness a live organist, we walked around the city and did a little bit of shopping.

Although our time in Iceland was very short, it was absolutely worth it. My job allows me to go on these little weekend getaways with the people I love and I am so thankful for that. We will definitely go back to Iceland to explore the rest of the country. I would recommend a trip like this to anyone who loves adventure and nature! I am already excited for my next trip!! Thanks for reading!

Hi Matija! Yes, it is crazy how easily accessible everything is in Iceland. In just about 48 hours we managed to see most of the hot spots along the southern coast of the country. Road trips are an amazing way to discover Iceland (especially when you are short on time)! Thank you for reading ?

I used to work with a lady born in Iceland, she always told me she used to tell visiting soldiers during the war that “they could find a pretty girl behind every tree”, after seeing these pictures I now have a better understanding of her statement, lol! Looks like you had a great time, I hope to make it there one day.

What a fantastic post, Annick! It’s amazing how much awesome sightseeing you can pack into just a couple of days. Nonetheless, some vacationers will feel that driving from place to place takes a lot of time and energy. I believe the best way to explore the “Land of Fire and Ice” is from the comfort and luxury of your floating hotel. A cruisetour is relatively affordable, provides good value and offers unrivaled convenience – unpack once on a trip with multiple destinations!

Iceland is one of the most intriguing cruise destinations in the world. You’ll be spoiled for choice of footage for your Instagram story with breathtaking scenery that combines the natural beauty of fiery volcanoes and lava fields with icy glaciers, waterfalls, and deep fjords. Add in the dazzling, awe-inspiring splendor of the mysterious Northern Lights, and it’s easy to understand why cruises to Iceland have become so incredibly popular.

Since Reykjavik is a port of departure where you can begin and/or end your cruise, I’ve pinned your post to share with those clients who may prefer a cruise and road trip, similar to what many folks do on an Alaska cruisetour vacation. I’ll also share it in my Facebook travel group of 4.5K members who particularly enjoy travel blogs. Best wishes and happy travels!

Hello Dallas! Thank you very much for the kind words! I have to agree that cruises are an amazing way to discover new places and new cultures without all the hassle of organizing a trip! Thank you very much for sharing this post with your community! I hope this article can help someone with their future travel plans ?
